LOCAL SPOTLIGHT — INDIGO & VELVET

This month we headed back to New Paltz and visited a women’s clothing boutique named Indigo & Velvet. To say we are OBSESSED with this stunning boutique is an understatement. This fresh and trendy store is located on main street and opened it’s doors in late November. Owner Alyssa Boss is a super sweet, New Paltz native who was over the moon excited to talk to us about her journey to brick & mortar.

Alyssa started a career in retail management in Long Island and eventually moved to NYC to continue it. Once she was ready for a change, she moved back home, took some time to reconnect with herself and planned her next steps. She always knew the particular space Indigo & Velvet abides in would make an amazing retail store. Although she always admired the space, she thought to herself “the current owners would never leave.” As fate would have it, soon after Alyssa moved back home the space was available! She busily got to work and opened Indigo & Violet.

When you first walk in you can’t help but forget you’re in the Hudson Valley. You immediately sense a NYC charm and become enchanted by the lively blue and brick interior. As you walk throughout the store you’ll notice framed vintage vogue artwork, the Moroccan inspired pattern on the floor, and (our personal favorite) the cosmic gold star lighting that hangs by the register, fitting rooms and throughout the store on shelves. When designing the space Alyssa treated her retail store as an extension of her home and personal style. She is heavily influenced by exotic patterns but, fuses it with modern and elite elements to form a unique aesthetic. She ultimately achieved to create a space that feels open and clean without losing it’s personality.

Alyssa is intentional about working with vendors that are fair trade, cruelty free and ethically made. It’s evident that the items in her store are highly curated and have a very clear, cohesive style. You will find a lot of vegan leather, army greens and trendy neutrals. From the beginning, Alyssa decided she would not create an overly saturated store that was heavily merchandised and we couldn’t agree more! That feeling when you leave a store thinking you might have missed some things...awful. So, she strategically merchandised her clothing in one clean section where customers can see it all.

Collectively Indigo & Velvet offers such an enjoyable shopping experience. The best part about visiting this shop (besides being inspired by the amazing interior) was witnessing Alyssa’s joy when talking about her store and customers. Clothing can be an amazing tool to build confidence and self esteem, a tool Alyssa loves to share with everyone that walks in her doors. It was apparent, with much sincerity that she loves to engage with her customers and build relationships. Our visit to Indigo & Velvet served as an encouraging reminder to support the individual’s in our local community.

Be sure to check Indigo & Velvet next time you’re in New Paltz! Where should we go next month? Let us know @outsideofnyc
